Small-business credit cards occupy a niche between personal credit cards and corporate cards. They’re an option for owners of small and midsize enterprises that haven’t built enough of a business credit profile to qualify for corporate cards. You must operate a business to apply for one of these cards, although it doesn’t have to be incorporated. Even sole proprietorships can qualify. The key thing to understand about small-business credit cards is that the account holder is personally responsible for the debt on the card and can be required to pay it in the event the business fails. This makes them different from corporate cards, where only the company is liable for the debt.
The application will usually ask for information about the business — including its name, its legal structure, its tax ID number (which can be the owner’s Social Security number if it’s a sole proprietorship) and its annual revenue — as well as information about the individual guaranteeing the debt.
